In both of the debates (The McCain-Obama and the Palin-Biden) the democrat candidate criticised the republican on the basis that Mr. McCain refuses to meet with the prime minister of a NATO member that is present in Afghanistan. See, for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQcLBwFEW30
That NATO member is Spain and it is referred to an interview with radio journalists, where he did not give an specific answer to the question of a Spanish journalist.
Many people in Spain understand Mr. McCain attitude and many more Americans will do it if they know what Mr. Zapatero (the Spanish prime minister, not its president since the country is a monarchy with King Juan Carlos the 1st in office) did in 2003.
During a military parade in Madrid, Spain, when American troops participated, he remained sat (in his chair!) when the American flag was passing. According Spanish standards (and American ones, I suppose) this is a way to be despreciative toward a country. It was openly discussed in Spain and was rejected by many people, even by members of his own party.
You can get more info about that question searching in Google with Zapatero / sentado (=means sat) / bandera Estados Unidos (=US flag). You can see the picture at ((Mr. Zapatero is the one in dark suit (bottom right) below the woman in a red dress.)
So,…. would your first international meetings be with a man that has been so despreciataive towards America?
Notice, that in Mr. Obama European tour, he refused to visit Spain in order to avoid the picture with Mr. Zapatero in American press.
Once you know all of this…. Why do Republican candidates feel shameful to explain their reasons of why they are not in love with Spain’s prime minister?
